The Root of all Evil

Let’s first define our terms:  Root is often defined as the place where something begins, where it springs into being. Evil is that which causes harm or destruction or misfortune. "The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones". WordWeb

I have often heard the phrase "The root of all evil" used in conjunction with money. I could never understand why money was considered the root of all evil. After all it does not do anything of its own accord; it takes human interaction with money to generate evil, doesn’t it? Of course, this is a misquotation, the actual quote from the bible is “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10 In the full context it makes perfect sense.

However too often when we hear a statement, story or phrase, we take it as the truth. We accept it without investigation, without questioning its validity. It then can become our belief, our truth; whether it is true or not, we believe it to be true and our thoughts support this belief by repeating it over and over again. With a strong belief in place we will go to battle without hesitation. To see the truth of this statement, just look at the world history of religion. We are still fighting wars based on the belief that "our way" is right and all the others are wrong.

This leads to what I believe is the root of all evil when left unchecked: our thoughts. This is the place where a belief begins. Thoughts and emotions are forms of energy that create our reality individually and as a collective. So by the same token our thoughts can be the root for good.

The idea that thoughts create is not a new concept; it has been around a long time. But now science through Quantum Physics has shown that there is a field of energy, a measurable web that permeates everything, that is intelligent, and that responds to human emotion. This field of energy is known as the “Quantum Hologram". We know now that human thoughts, feelings, and emotions are vibrations that create patterns in the Quantum Hologram. Positive, uplifting emotions have a higher vibration and less supportive emotions have a lower vibration.

We are often oblivious or ignore the thoughts that are going through our heads. These thoughts, which are frequently created out of our past experiences and conditioning, may no longer be true for our lives now and maybe never were true to begin with. It is like being told by an authority figure that you are stupid. You might believe it because of the source, even if it is not at all true.  Another example is when someone else makes a mistake, we often have much more compassion for them than for ourselves in the same situation.  So we can note that, and have compassion for ourselves.

When we begin to cultivate awareness of our thoughts and emotions, we begin to see just how much we live according to other people and society’s beliefs and actions that we have internalized over the years.  How much of your self-concept do you think has been handed down to you by your parents' comments when you were a child?

These negative thoughts (like fear, anger or resentment) are created out of a lower frequency of energy. Yet we continue to focus on them --whether we are aware of them or not-- as they run over and over again in the background, repeating like a loop tape on an answering machine. Remember, your mind does not know true from false, fact from fantasy: it creates your current reality based on your thoughts and emotions.

You can begin to change your life by starting to notice what you think about throughout the day. Pay attention to the presence of those thoughts that are not supportive of what you want in your life. Questions thoughts that point toward you being a particular way -- like the example above being told you are stupid. How many times have you said this to yourself or even out loud to others, Oh I’m so stupid, why did I do that? If you took the best action you could in the moment, does that make you stupid or did you just make a mistake? Making a mistake is part of the perfection of the universe. It is not about being perfect or never making a mistake. What it is about is learning from your mistake so you can do things differently the next time. That is not the action of a stupid person, that’s the action of a very wise person.

When you become aware of these lower vibrational thoughts about yourself and others you can begin to replace them with more loving thoughts -- thoughts that support what you want to create in your life. Remember to focus your attention and intention on what you want to create. Stop putting energy into creating what you don’t want. You don’t have to ignore or make light of your current situation to focus your thoughts on something better, something more positive. One high vibrational thought at a time will begin creating the life you want.
